Meeting Spot on the Meadow: NEBourhoods Outdoor Kitchen
The team around the "Growing a Tasty Neuperlach" NEB Action is working together with Neuperlach residents to make the neighbourhood edible – be it with suitable balcony plantings, joint cooking events or the construction of garden beds.
The communal, healthy and regional production of food in the neighbourhood allows everyone involved to recognise its value – and discover that a home-grown tomato tastes better than a store-bought one. In the spirit of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), the connections between agriculture, food production and climate protection can thus be experienced at a local level.
Since not only gardening, planting and harvesting are part of the NEB Action, but cooking as well, the creative minds Raphael Krome and Adrian Sölch from Raumfragen Neuperlach developed a mobile kitchen island: two gas hobs, work surfaces, sinks with fresh and waste water - all on two wheels, easy to transport on foot. The kitchen is designed for outdoor use, so nothing stands in the way of a neighbourly cooking event in the open air! Because communal cooking and eating brings people together. The playful collection of recipes designed by Christine Krauss and Jörg Sellerbeck can provide inspiration for this: the collection facilitates dialogue and brings the commonalities of people from different backgrounds onto the plate.
The kitchen is a prototype and its potential uses will be tested over the summer. Anyone who would like to try out the kitchen can contact greencity@nebourhoods.de.
In addition, the "Growing a Tasty Neuperlach" NEB Action team is already supporting around ten new garden projects in Neuperlach through joint building activities and with expertise and individualised advice. Gardens of varying size are currently being created at several facilities in Neuperlach – what they all have in common is the hexagonal raised bed system developed by the creative minds Anna Diermeier, Janine Mackenroth and Richard Schleich. Thanks to simple building instructions and using materials from the DIY store, anyone interested can use it to create their own personalised garden in which to grow their own vegetables, herbs and fruit.
