"Wohnen Weiterbauen" – A cinematic insight into spatial possibilities

NEBourhoods Wohnen weiterbauen

September 2024. How can we make residential buildings in Neuperlach fit for the future through a socially just renovation?

Last summer semester, 18 architecture students at the Technical University of Munich explored the question of how flats in Neuperlach would look if they were renovated with timber-framed winter gardens. The students were supervised by architect and scenographer Andreas Kretzer (Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences), who passed on his many years of experience in filming architectural models to them. Working with the team from "Wohnen Weiterbauen" (Redesigning Housing Structures) and using the students' richly detailed models, Andreas Kretzer produced a short film which captures the spatial qualities of the designs.

The short film runs about 10 minutes and explains how timber-framed winter gardens can be used to renovate residential buildings. Above all, the short film allows viewers to immerse themselves in new living environments that have not yet existed in large housing estates. The film illustrates how small children's rooms can be expanded to include play areas; how winter gardens can be used for eating meals or simply to set up a deck chair. The renovation of the residential buildings thus goes far beyond energy optimisation.

The film is intended to present the ideas of "Wohnen Weiterbauen" in a way that can be appreciated throughout Europe.

As part of the exhibition at the Kulturhaus Neuperlach, the film was featured from 18 to 21 September alongside models, drawings, photos and other results of the "Wohnen Weiterbauen" NEB Action. The exhibition was designed by Enrica Ferrucci (www.ichbaumit.com).

The "Wohnen Weiterbauen" NEB Action investigates how the structural deficiencies of existing residential buildings can be improved socially, technologically and economically. The aim is to create an energetic upgrade and a social benefit at the same time by renovating facades and expanding existing living spaces using prefabricated timber elements or reused building components.
